Gastric Bypass Surgery
Being overweight can stop you from living an active lifestyle and lead to health complications, such as diabetes and heart disease.
For patients who have tried everything to lose weight but not been successful, gastric bypass surgery can jumpstart dramatic weight loss.
Why should you choose to undergo treatment at our Tijuana, Mexico, bariatric center?
Improve Your Health and Quality of Life
Rapid Weight Loss
Diet and exercise alone can take several years to show results. In some cases, they do not produce results at all. Meanwhile, a gastric bypass encourages rapid weight loss by restricting how much you can eat and how many calories your body absorbs.
Dramatic ResultsThis procedure can help you lose 60 to 80 percent of your excess body weight. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery found that 90 percent of bariatric patients maintain long-term weight loss.
Better Overall HealthStudies have found that gastric bypass surgery can reduce or reverse obesity-related health issues, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stress on your joints. After surgery, you could feel better both inside and out and increase your lifespan.

Gastric bypass surgery (also known as Roux-en-Y surgery because of the way the digestive tract is shaped once it is restructured) is a restrictive and malabsorptive type of weight loss surgery. Like gastric sleeve surgery, this procedure reduces the size of your stomach to a small pouch, limiting how much you can eat. But unlike a gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y surgery also changes how your body absorbs nutrients.
During the procedure, Dr. Gonzalez will access your digestive system using minimally invasive, laparoscopic tools. He will then resize your stomach to approximately the size of a walnut. Once the new, smaller stomach is formed, he will attach your new gastric pouch to your small intestine, simultaneously removing several feet of small intestines.
By bypassing your stomach and most of your small intestines, a Roux-en-Y restricts the number of calories you absorb. This results in dramatic, long-term weight loss, making Roux-en-Y a very popular type of weight loss surgery.

The Benefits of a U.S. Hospital at Affordable Prices
Many patients wonder whether it is safe to travel to Mexico for surgery. The answer is yes. Medical tourism is safe, reliable, and very affordable, which is why millions of patients are traveling to foreign countries for medical care every year. Our campus looks and feels more like a resort than a hospital. In fact, many of our patients have said their stay felt more like a vacation than simply receiving medical care.
In addition to our resort-like amenities, our hospital offers the same state-of-the-art surgical techniques as hospitals in the United States, but at a much lower cost. We also uphold the highest safety standards and services to help patients feel comfortable and safe. When working with Oasis of Hope Bariatrics, you:
- Do not have to worry about flying to Mexico. Our friendly, English-speaking drivers will pick you up from San Diego International Airport and transport you directly to Tijuana.
- Do not have to worry about knowing Spanish. All of our staff speaks perfect English. If you are not comfortable communicating in Spanish or English, we can arrange for a translator to assist you during your stay so that you never feel uninformed or lost.
- Do not have to worry about feeling alone. Traveling to a foreign country alone can seem scary. That's why we allow our weight loss surgery patients to bring a companion free of charge.
Our services are all-inclusive, so all of these perks are included in the cost of your surgery.

Factors Which Can Affect Your Candidacy for Gastric Bypass
Body Mass Index
Because a gastric bypass is a more invasive option than other bariatric procedures, it is usually reserved for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or higher. If you have a lower BMI, gastric sleeve surgery may be a good option.
PregnancyPregnant patients are not good candidates for bariatric surgery. If you are planning to become pregnant, we recommend waiting until you give birth before considering a gastric bypass.
Previous SurgeryA gastric bypass is highly recommended for patients who have had gastric sleeve or LAP-Band surgery. If you are not experiencing the results you wanted, a gastric bypass may be a more effective option for you.

Six Simple Steps Leading Up to Surgery
Initial Call or E-Mail
When you contact Oasis of Hope Bariatrics, you will be put in touch with our patient coordinator. They can answer any questions you have about the process.
You will then be provided with a series of medical history forms. These forms will help us determine if you are a good candidate for bariatric surgery.
Approval for SurgeryWhen you return your medical history forms, we will typically let you know if you are approved for surgery within 24 hours.
Book a Date
If you are approved, we will work with your schedule to choose the best date for your procedure. You will also submit a $500 deposit at this time.
You will work with our admissions coordinator to book your travel to and from San Diego International Airport.
We will put you in touch with our in-house nutritionist, who will instruct you on what to eat in the two weeks before your surgery.
"Everything Went Extremely Smooth"
"They're all wonderful here. From the beginning, from setting everything up to the ride down here, everything went extremely smooth. Everyone is so wonderful and kind and caring and compassionate. I would HIGHLY suggest this. In fact, I already have to another coworker that's wanting the same procedure done." Jenna
Preparing for a Roux-en-Y
Our doctors' first priority is the safety and success of your surgery. Upon arriving at our Tijuana hospital, we require all patients to complete:
- An electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Chest x-ray
- Evaluation by a cardiologist
These steps help us ensure that you are healthy enough to undergo surgery. If our team determines that your health is a concern, we will not allow you to proceed with the operation.
During a gastric bypass, your stomach is divided to limit the amount of calories you can consume.
Surgery & Initial Recovery: Completed in Under One Week
On the day of your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia by our board-certified anesthesiologist. This ensures that you stay asleep and do not feel any pain during the procedure.
Once we confirm that you are fully comfortable, our oard-certified bariatric surgeon Dr. Francisco Gonzalez will create four to six small incisions on your abdomen.
Using laparoscopic tools, Dr. Gonzalez will divide the stomach into one small and one large section. The small section will be about five percent of its original size so you will feel full from eating less food.
You will spend the next four nights recovering at our hospital. Each room is furnished with a companion bed, Netflix, and a private bathroom for your privacy and comfort.
"I'm Just so Happy"
"I can't believe just how incredible I feel considering I just had major surgery. I literally was up and walking within 20 minutes after coming back to my room from recovery. I really have not had any issues. I'm just so happy that I've been able to do this." Sharon
What to Expect during Your Recovery from Weight Loss Surgery
Before discharging you from the hospital, our nutritionist will schedule consultations to help you get adjusted to your new diet. We also require all weight loss surgery patients to perform a barium swallow before leaving our Tijuana hospital. During this post-op assessment, you will take a barium sulfate solution that will be tracked through your digestive tract using x-ray technology. This step ensures that there are no leaks after your surgery.

I feel great and have had no medical issues since my discharge from Oasis. I’ve lost around 40 pounds in 6 months since the surgery and I feel great. My knees stopped hurting, I feel good after eating and I have a lot more energy. My kids are happy that I’m much more active and for once I feel like life is good !! Thanks Dr. Gonzales"

Possible Complications following Gastric Bypass Surgery
No surgery is without risks. Although the rate of complications is low, these include:
- Negative reactions to anesthesia
- Dumping syndrome
- Malnutrition or vitamin deficiencies
- Stretching of the stomach pouch
To reduce your risk of complications during and after surgery, closely follow your surgeon's instructions and live the healthiest lifestyle possible.
Refine Your Figure
Another aftereffect of weight loss surgery is sagging skin, which can cause rashes and discomfort and keep you from fully enjoying your aesthetic results. Our Tijuana hospital also offers post-bariatric body contouring to address these concerns. During these procedures, designed to target the abdomen, thighs, arms, and other areas, our plastic surgery team will remove stubborn fat deposits, trim away excess skin, and tighten the remaining tissue to create a more flattering, proportional figure.
