Gastric Bypass

Being overweight can stop you from living an active lifestyle and lead to health complications, such as diabetes and heart disease.

For patients who have tried everything to lose weight but not been successful, a gastric bypass surgery can jumpstart dramatic weight loss.

Why should you choose a gastric bypass?

Improve Your Health  and Quality of Life

Rapid Weight Loss

Diet and exercise alone can take several years to show results. In some cases, they do not produce results at all. Meanwhile, a gastric bypass encourages rapid weight loss by restricting how much you can eat and how many calories you can absorb

Proven Results

A gastric bypass can help you lose 60 to 80 percent of excess body weight. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery found that 90 percent of bariatric patients maintain long-term weight loss

Better Overall Health

Studies have found that gastric bypass surgery can reduce or reverse obesity-related health issues, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and stress on your joints. After surgery, you can feel better both inside and out and increase your lifespan

Do I qualify for a gastric bypass?

Factors Which Can Affect  Your Candidacy for Gastric Bypass

Body Mass Index

Because a gastric bypass is a more invasive option than other bariatric procedures, it is usually reserved for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or higher. If you have a lower BMI, a gastric sleeve may be a good option.

Pregnancy

Pregnant patients are not good candidates for bariatric surgery. If you are planning to become pregnant, we recommend waiting until you give birth before considering a gastric bypass.

Previous Surgery

A gastric bypass is highly recommended for patients who have had a gastric sleeve or lap-band surgery. If you are not experiencing the results you wanted, a gastric bypass may be a more effective option for you.

What is my BMI?

When you return your medical history forms, we will typically let you know if you are approved for surgery within 24 hours.

Book a Date

If you are approved, you will schedule your surgery date. You will also submit a $500 deposit at this time.

Choose a Flight

You will work with our admissions coordinator to book your travel to and from San Diego International Airport

Start Preparing

We will put you in touch with our in-house nutritionist, who will instruct you on what to eat in the two weeks before your surgery.

What happens during the surgery?

During a gastric bypass, your stomach is divided to limit the amount of calories you can consume.

All Stages of Surgery Completed in Under One Week

The day before your surgery is scheduled, you will check-in at our hospital. If you brought your family with you, they can stay at our on-site hotel

On the day of your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia by our board-certified anesthesiologist. This ensures that you stay asleep and do not feel any pain during your procedure.

Board-certified bariatric surgeon Dr. Francisco Gonzalez will create four to six small incisions on your stomach.

Using laparoscopic tools, Dr. Gonzalez will use a stomach stapler to divide the stomach into one small and one large section. The small section will be about five percent of its original size and allow you to feel full faster.

He will then bypass several feet of intestines and connect the remaining intestines to the end of the pouch. This allows food to move directly from your new stomach pouch to the small intestine and restricts the number of calories you absorb.
Our team will then close the incisions with stitches. The entire surgery can be completed in about an hour and a half.

You will spend the next four nights in recovery at our hospital. All rooms are furnished with a companion bed, Netflix, and a private bathroom for your privacy and comfort.
