mini gastric bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass

Obesity can lead to serious health issues, such as high cholesterol and heart disease, affecting your overall health and quality of life.

A mini gastric bypass is a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure that changes how much you can eat and how you absorb calories.

So why is a mini bypass such a great option for many patients at Oasis of Hope Bariatrics in Tijuana, Mexico?

Improve Your Quality of Life with a Shorter, Less Invasive Procedure

Long-Lasting Weight Loss

Surgery reduces the size of your stomach by approximately 90 percent and the length of your intestines by up to seven feet. This dramatically limits how much you can eat and means your body will absorb fewer calories.

Improve or Eliminate Health Issues

The procedure can lower your insulin dependency and reverse type 2 diabetes for some patients. Additionally, it can improve obesity-related diseases, such as high cholesterol, hypertension, and other metabolic issues.

Shorter and Safer

While a traditional gastric bypass takes about four hours, a mini gastric bypass can be completed in about one hour. It also has a lower risk of complications–just 2.9 percent compared to 7 percent for traditional bypasses.

Feel More Active & Confident

Obesity can make you feel self-conscious and prevent you from participating in an active lifestyle. Surgery can improve your vitality and boost your self-confidence.

Wondering how a mini gastric bypass works?

stomach before and after a mini gastric bypass

A Brief Overview

During mini gastric bypass surgery, our surgeon will create up to five small incisions in the abdominal area. Using laparoscopic technology, he will then resize the stomach and reroute the intestines. Because a mini gastric bypass restricts how much you can eat and how you process your food, it is a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. Meanwhile, other procedures like gastric sleeve surgery simply resize the stomach to help you feel full faster.

After this type of gastric bypass, patients typically feel fuller faster and absorb fewer calories than they did before weight loss surgery, leading to effective long-term weight loss.

Because this method of bariatric surgery has a lower risk of complications than a standard Roux-en-Y (gastric bypass), many patients at our Tijuana hospital are opting for this method of weight loss.

Do I qualify for a mini gastric bypass?

Recommendations for Patients Considering the Treatment

Our team will perform various medical history evaluations to determine whether you are a good candidate for mini gastric bypass. Some of the most important criteria include:

Body Mass Index

In order to qualify for mini gastric bypass surgery, you should have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 without comorbidities or over 35 with comorbidities.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, may not be good candidates for this surgery because it increases your risk of bile reflux. If you suffer from GERD, you may be a better candidate for a traditional bypass

Healthy Lifestyle

Smoking and heavy alcohol use can increase your risk of complications and heart disease, so you should be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle prior to surgery and throughout your recovery

What is my BMI?

BMI: 25.0—29.9

Weight Status: Overweight

Additional Candidacy Requirements

Before scheduling your gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or another form of bariatric surgery, our team will perform extensive pre-operative evaluations, including:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) tests
  • Labwork
  • Chest x-rays
  • Cardiologist evaluations

These exams will help us determine if you are healthy enough for surgery. If we feel that you are not healthy, we will not allow you to proceed into the operating room for your safety.

"A Truly Amazing Experience"

"A truly amazing experience, going to the Oasis of Hope, My husband had a gastric sleeve done lost week. The hospital is a very modern and up to date facility, clean and beautiful. The patient rooms are more like a hotel rooms each room has a private bathroom and contains a hospital bed and a regular bed for your companion..." Andreea T.

Mini Gastric Bypass as a Revision Surgery

Mini gastric bypass is a popular option for patients considering revision surgery after gastric sleeve surgery, LAP-Band, or gastric balloon. Similarly, those who previously underwent mini bypass surgery can often undergo a duodenal switch or traditional gastric bypass. Because of our outstanding results in this area, about 50 percent of the procedures we perform are revisions.

Advanced Laparoscopic Training

In addition to implementing the latest tools and technology, our Tijuana weight loss team is trained in the latest surgical techniques. Dr. Gonzalez trained at the Laparoscopic Center of South Florida and has become a recognized expert in minimally invasive, laparoscopic weight loss surgery.

Unlike open surgery, laparoscopic tools allow Dr. Gonzalez to perform bariatric surgeries through several small incisions. For the patient, this means:

  • Smaller surgical scars
  • Decreased risk of complications including blood loss and tissue trauma
  • A speedier recovery
  • Less discomfort during the healing period
  • A quicker return to your normal activities

What can you expect on the day of surgery?

Mini gastric bypass shrinks your stomach and bypasses a portion of your intestines to reduce the amount of calories you can consume and process.

Surgery Can Be Completed In Under One Hour

The day before your procedure, you will check in at our hospital. Your family can stay at our on-site hotel

Before beginning the procedure, you will be placed under anesthesia by our board-certified anesthesiologist.

Our board-certified bariatric surgeon, Dr. Gonzalez, will create up to five small incisions on your stomach. Each will range from 5mm to 12mm in length.

Using laparoscopic tools, Dr. Gonzalez will divide the stomach and reduce its size by approximately 90 percent

Once the stomach is the size and shape of a small tube, Dr. Gonzalez will bypass two to seven feet of intestines

The remaining intestines will then be reattached to the stomach to reroute food to the small intestine.

You will spend three nights at our hospital recovering. Your private room will feature a private bathroom and Netflix for your enjoyment.

Tips for Your Recovery

After waking up from surgery, you may feel sore. Our doctors can provide medication to help ease discomfort.

You will stay at our hospital for three nights so that our team can closely monitor you. In order to reduce the risk of blood clots and promote healing, our team will also help you start walking soon after surgery. Then, you will attend a follow-up appointment so that our surgeon can check on your progress and answer any questions you might have about your recovery.

Whether you undergo a gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y, or another of our procedures, we offer a nutritional consultation before you are discharged from the hospital. This consultation will help establish healthy eating habits so you can experience successful long-term weight loss.

We also require all patients to perform a barium swallow at the hospital to ensure that there are no leaks after their procedure.

A TypicalRecovery Timeline

1-3 Days

While you stay at our hospital, your companion can stay at our on-site hotel or spend time with you in your private room.

2 Weeks

You should plan to take up to two weeks off of work so that you can fully recover.

1-3 Months

You will transition from a special liquid protein diet to a regular healthy diet.

6 Months

You can expect to begin losing a large percentage of excess body weight.

Will the results be noticeable?

What to Expect from Your Results

The weight loss journey is not over when you leave our hospital. In order to experience the long-term success and incredible results that weight loss surgery can offer, you need to be an active participant in your recovery.

Most patients who undergo gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or another form of weight loss surgery experience rapid, significant weight loss as long as they stick to the prescribed diet and commit to regular exercise.

Although the results will vary from patient to patient, most patients are able to achieve their weight loss goal in one year after surgery.

And the reach of your results isn't limited to your physique. As time goes on, you should notice that you have more confidence, energy, and excitement about participating in activities with your family and friends.

If you are not getting the results you want, our team can discuss your routine to determine whether there are any outstanding factors that are preventing you from reaching your goals. If aesthetic concerns such as loose skin are preventing you from enjoying your results to the fullest, we can also perform post-bariatric body contouring at our hospital to surgically trim excess skin and reveal leaner contours

Our 5-Year
Patient Follow-Up Program

The Oasis of Hope Bariatrics team is committed to helping patients maintain their results, even after they leave Tijuana, Mexico for home. To give you the access and support you need, we offer a five-year Patient Follow-Up Program at no additional cost. This program provides patients with around-the-clock support for their questions regarding weight loss, exercise, or concerns after surgery.
