My name is Judy Welfelt and I'm from Newton, Kansas, which is just north of Wichita. I've struggled with my weight for many years. When I went in to see my doctor for my annual physical about nine months ago, he suggested bariatric surgery and I was quite shocked. I'm 65 years old and I didn't know whether I was too old to do that or if it was the right thing to do. We started researching it and trying to find out about bariatric surgery and where would be the best place to do it and that sort of thing. My doctor sent me to a group that was in Kansas and I went up and visited with them and promptly found out that my insurance wouldn't pay for it. And so I just figured, well, forget it then, because we can't afford that kind of money. And so it was just kind of like another dream dashed. Then I went back to visit with my doctor again and he said that he'd had a patient that had come down to Mexico. And there again, I was shocked that my doctor would recommend such a thing. And he said that she had done very well and that he had checked out the facilities and the doctor and he felt like this was something that we should try to pursue. So I thought that's something that I want to do because I want to be active with my family and my grandchildren. I haven't been able to do that for quite a while. So we continued our research and talking to people and talking to our family physician. I visited with this friend and she told me what a great experience she'd had here and that she would totally recommend it. And so I kept getting positive feedback and it started looking like maybe this would be something that we should pursue. Everything down here has been extremely positive. And we have been really . . . we got here on Monday, scared to death that we were doing the right thing. But by Monday evening and Tuesday, before I went in for my surgery, we had met so many wonderful people and the doctors were so kind, so compassionate and friendly, and everyone just treated us so wonderfully, and I felt like we were in really, good hands. I feel like this was definitely a very, very good experience and I'm really excited about my future and I'm glad that I did this and I look forward to reaping the benefits of this whole process.
