Your Weight Loss Surgery Options
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, has become one of the most popular weight loss procedures because it is relatively simple and produces great results. During the procedure, the bariatric surgeon removes a significant portion of the stomach, leaving behind a small "gastric sleeve" about the size of a banana. Because the stomach is smaller, patients feel full after eating less, and they can experience healthy, gradual weight loss.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is perhaps the most well-known bariatric surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach and alters the digestive tract so that a portion of the small intestine is bypassed. The surgery has both a restrictive effect (limiting the amount of food you can eat) and a malabsorptive effect (limiting the calories your body absorbs), which can lead to significant and rapid weight loss.
Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery
Mini gastric bypass is similar to traditional gastric bypass, but the surgeon performs less intestinal rerouting. The surgery is completed in less time, which can reduce the chances of complications for certain patients. Mini gastric bypass can have the same restrictive and malabsorptive benefits as the traditional approach, and patients can still experience life-changing weight loss. Your bariatric surgeon will help you understand which form of the surgery is right for you during your consultation.
Revision Bariatric Surgery
If you've previously undergone bariatric surgery and you are not satisfied with the results, the surgeons at Oasis of Hope Bariatrics can perform revision surgery to help you achieve greater weight loss. Surgical revisions often involve further reducing the size of the stomach or converting gastric sleeves into gastric bypasses. At Oasis of Hope Bariatrics, we also see many patients who need revisions after failed LAP-BAND® procedures.
